Alabama is located in the southern region of the United States. Bordered by Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, the Gulf of Mexico and Mississippi, this state ranks second in the size of its inland waterways. Alabama is proudly known as the "Heart of Dixie".
The first European settlement in the state was founded by the French and called Mobile. This took place back in 1702. It wasn't until 1819 that Alabama was admitted to the Union

Settlers between 1820-1830 arrived to make use of the fertile soil. Planters brought slaves with them and traders brought in more. The cotton plantations expanded and the economy gained because of the large cotton plantations. Because of slavery, the census of 1860 shows that 45% of the population was in fact enslaved Africans.
DIXIE
When Alabama seceded from the Union in 1861 to join the Confederate States of America, they contributed around 120,000 soldiers to the Civil War. By 1865 all slaves were free and Alabama was readmitted to the Union in 1868.
Alabama has a temperate climate and tends to be warmer in the southern part because of its closeness to the Gulf of Mexico. The northern part of the state tends to be cooler near the Appalachian Mountains. For the most part, Alabama has very hot summers and mild winters with a large amount of rainfall every year. Because of this, the state enjoys an extended growing season.
