Copper Theft of Gutters and Downspouts - Replacement Idea

Copper theft is on the rise; from 2003 to 2007, prices for scrap copper increased fourfold. All types of structures have fallen victim, such as community centers, libraries, homes, etc.

Attempts are being taken to reduce the number of thefts. These attempts include closer monitoring of scrap yards and lower prices for the metal. But if you are already the victim of a theft, you are left with the responsibility of replacing the missing gutters and downspout.

In deciding on a replacement, there are several alternatives: The most logical choice is to install inexpensive/used gutters and downspouts. This choice makes sense since these replacements total less than copper and, if the theft is repeated, places the owner at less financial risk.

Unfortunately, the least expensive gutters and downspouts may not be the most attractive. For less than 0, gutters and downspouts on a home could be upgraded to copper.....without actually being copper. Each gallon of copper paint covers about 100 sq. ft. with one coat.

Copper liquid coating is a urethane roof coating with copper flakes added. The copper flakes causes a coppery finish; a finish that ages to bronze.

An additional benefit is the urethane base, embedded in mesh, allows flashing of gutter seams to prevent leaks.

The application of the copper liquid coating is easy. Just wipe down the gutters and downspouts to remove anything loose or dirty. Then mix the coating to a smooth texture. Using a stiff brush, apply to the surface of the gutters and downspout. If needed flash the gutter seams, using a stitchbond mesh and coating applications above and below the mesh.

If you want to retain the initial brightness of the coating, then cover the painted areas with a clearcoat to prevent the aging of the copper in the coating.

By the end of the second month, the finish to the gutters and downspouts will have turned noticeably more bronze. That bronze tint will continue to darken over the coming years.
