Aluminum MC Cable - How is it Different From Copper Electrical Cable?

First of all, MC cables are used outdoors or directly underground whether they're copper or aluminum. They both have very similar constructions with the main difference, of course, aluminum or copper strands.

Aluminum MC cable is made with THHN wires covered with an aluminum metal clad armor. Since all of the wires, including the ground wire, have THHN insulation this MC cable is available for use outdoors and in conduit. Romex cable comes with THHN wires as well, however the ground wire is not insulated which is the reason it cannot be used outdoors.

The aluminum MC cable can also come with a PVC jacket over the aluminum armor to make it moisture tight. This allows it to be used as an underground cable without the use of conduit. The copper versions also come in both outdoor and underground as well.

That is the make up of the cable but why would someone choose aluminum over copper or the opposite?

Copper is a much better conductor of electricity which most electrical inspectors require. The aluminum is much cheaper and lighter due to the pricing of each commodity which then reflects the pricing of the cables. If you are allowed to use aluminum in your application you will need a gauge size or two bigger than the recommended copper gauge. This is because of the conductivity difference that your electrician will also explain to you.

If you can use the aluminum version I highly recommend it because even with the bigger gauge size you will pay less money for the cable. You will also pay less on shipping due to the weight difference from copper cables.
