How to Sew a Disappearing Crazy Nine Patch Quilting Block

For those of you who know how to make a traditional nine patch here is a new way to freshen things up. The nine patch is one of the easiest and most basic block to make. It is also one of the fastest. The use of strip sewing or as some call it assembly line sewing you can whip one of these out in to time. I stumbled upon this idea as I was looking around for a cute pattern for a quilt I was going to make as a present. I didn't have much time to make the quilt so I wanted to use an easy block, something I could push out in a day or two.

I came across the disappearing nine patch and I knew I had to give this a try. I also had a ton of charm squares that I needed to use. By the time you are done with this pattern it looks nothing like a nine patch but it's just as easy. So the first thing you need to do is pull out a bunch of charm squares. You can pick any size you want but make sure they are all the same size. You can also sew together some nine patch blocks and start from there is you want. Basically you are going to start from a nine patch block. Once you have your block you are going to lay it out on the cutting board and measure your finished block. Now you are going to cut the nine patch down the middle and across so you are left with four equal squares. Once you have your four equal squares out of your nine patch you will now turn the squares until you like the new pattern.

Once you have found a layout you like you then sew the four squares back together and then you will have your disappearing nine patch. I have found that it is best to have a darker fabric as the middle square in your nine patch before you cut it up. This way there will be a little dark square in each of the smaller squares. This will tie in the fabric to the whole new block.

Now because you are sewing cutting and then resewing your block size is going to be much smaller than you normally have. Make sure to measure your block after you have resewn it together to see how many blocks you will need for your quilt.
